Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres encouraged locals and visitors to book their tickets and see the musical as it enters its final Sydney months.

Matilda the Musical has been delighting audiences young and old since its Australian Premiere in Sydney in August and delivering significant results for the State’s visitor economy,” Mr Ayres said.

“It is estimated that over 35 per cent of tickets to Matilda the Musical have been sold to people from outside Sydney, with visitors flocking from interstate and overseas to see the musical. With only a few months left to see the show in Sydney, I urge everyone to book their tickets today – it would make a perfect Christmas present.”

Based on the novel by Roald Dahl, Matilda the Musical features music and lyrics by Australian musician Tim Minchin, and has had recent award-winning seasons in London’s West End and on Broadway.

The Australian Premiere season was secured exclusively for Sydney through the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.

Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said Matilda the Musical is a must see event for anyone visiting Sydney this summer.

“The Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Matilda the Musical forms part of a blockbuster line up of events including the incredible Art of the Brick: DC Comics exhibition and major art exhibitions Grayson Perry: My Pretty Little Art Career and The Greats: masterpieces from the National Galleries of Scotland,” Ms Chipchase said.

Matilda the Musical continues in Sydney until February 28 at the Lyric Theatre. Tickets are available from ticketmaster.com.au
