The NSW Government announced in May 2024 that it was rolling out the $1.4 million NSW Choose Tourism program to encourage young people, First Nations Australians, seniors and people living with a disability to pursue a career in tourism.

Funded by the Australian Government and delivered by Destination NSW, the NSW Choose Tourism Program aims to address industry workforce shortages by encouraging Australians to pursue a career in the visitor economy while helping operators to attract, retain and upskill staff.

As part of the program Destination NSW produced a video case study on Hotel Etico, which is transforming workplace inclusivity in tourism. This social enterprise employs people with disabilities across housekeeping, front desk, kitchen and guest services. By providing targeted training and support, Hotel Etico shows how neurodiversity can enhance guest experiences.

The hotel's employment model demonstrates how diverse workforces drive service quality and operational effectiveness. Through tailored workplace adjustments and mentorship, employees with disabilities develop professional skills and deliver exceptional hospitality services. This approach creates opportunities that benefit staff, guests, and the broader industry.

Hotel Etico challenges traditional workplace perceptions, offering a practical blueprint for inclusive employment in tourism. The case study reveals how embracing diverse talents can create meaningful career pathways and improve workplace culture.
