Toby’s Estate's flagship cafe and roastery in Chippendale, Sydney, has been crowned The World’s Best Coffee Shop at the inaugural World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops awards.

Coffee lovers from across the globe were invited to cast their votes online while a panel of coffee experts considered quality, barista experience, customer service, innovation, atmosphere, sustainability, food and consistency.

The win has attracted global media attention, with General Manager for Toby's Estate Jody Leslie telling CNN Travel that her team was “completely stoked” when they learned about the result.

Leslie said sales have surged since the announcement.

“We’ve been in the coffee game a long time and we know what we do is amazing and we try very hard to be consistent and so to be recognised like this is just amazing,” she said.

The Toby's Estate flagship cafe features an island brew bar so customers can get up close to the baristas, chat and watch the process unfold. There is also an on-site roastery featuring glass viewing windows.

While its flagship cafe is located in Sydney, Toby's Estate has branches across Australia and Asia, including Singapore, Indonesia and the Middle East.

The coffee chain began in 1997, when lawyer Toby Smith started the business from his mother’s garage in Sydney's Woolloomooloo.

Sydney also overtook Melbourne last year in a list of the top 10 best cities worldwide for coffee, published by American magazine Food & Wine. The Harbour City landed the number three spot on the list.

“I think our win is a win for the country. Australian coffee is, I think, the best in the world and so it doesn’t come down to Sydney and Melbourne,” said Leslie.

“We want to be strong as a country and that helps everyone.”
