The aroma of camel burgers and warm knafeh will soon be wafting through the air with millions expected to flock to Lakemba for one of Sydney’s most anticipated cultural events.

After attracting a record breaking 1.6 million visitors from all over Australia last year, Lakemba Nights during Ramadan is set to return on Thursday 27 February to Sunday 30 March.

More than 60 local businesses, including five food trucks, will gather to transform Haldon Street and the surrounding areas into a vibrant street market, with stalls offering visitors the chance to taste their way through several continents all in one night.

The month-long spectacular will run every Thursday-Sunday from 6pm-2am to coincide with the holy month of Ramadan and will provide the perfect meeting place for friends and family to come together to break their fast.

Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said while Lakemba Nights during Ramadan is famous for its extensive food range, it is also a fantastic display of the multicultural tapestry that makes up Canterbury-Bankstown.

“Lakemba Nights during Ramadan is one of the biggest events in our City and one of the main reasons we can host such an event is because of our diverse multicultural and multifaith community,” Mayor El-Hayek said.

“Although far from its humble beginnings as a street barbeque, the event continues to bring people together from all parts of the globe to experience the holy month of Ramadan together.

“I encourage everybody to come along to taste what our City has to offer and to also participate in the unique traditions of other cultures in a safe environment.”

The NSW Government's ‘Permit/Plug/Play’ pilot program is helping make the month-old Lakemba Nights event financially sustainable by installing infrastructure including meridian barriers, hostile vehicle mitigation and power outlets for stalls. Learn more here.
