Australian Traveller shortlisted 900 holiday options from 12,000 nominations and then had 20 of Australia’s most well-travelled experts whittle the list down to the ultimate 100 greatest places to holiday in Australia.
“What a coup not only to be named the best place in NSW to holiday, but the best island in Australia beating all of Queensland’s island escapes,” Mr Souris said.
“This ranking puts Lord Howe Island firmly on the map and proves that NSW is the perfect holiday place, even for an island getaway.
“Lord Howe is a World Heritage listed island, with dramatic rock formations, unique birdlife, marine life and coral reefs, great diving, fishing, accommodation, spas, and dining – it truly is the ultimate holiday location.
“I congratulate all the people who work so hard to ensure that Lord Howe Island is such a special place to visit,” Mr Souris said.
Local Member, Leslie Williams, says Lord Howe Island is the perfect island getaway, being less than a two hour flight from either Sydney or Brisbane.
“At any one time, you’ll be one of only 400 visitors on Lord Howe Island, one of the most beautiful islands in the Pacific, where getting around by bike or on foot is the way to go and there are plenty of adventures and activities to choose from,” Ms Williams said.
“Lord Howe Island is surrounded by the world’s southernmost coral reef. The pristine waters teem with unique marine life and rare coral to form the Lord Howe Island Marine Park, one of the largest in NSW.
“All year round, visitors can find adventure or rest and relaxation, whether it be climbing to the summit of Mount Gower or relaxing besides the lagoon and indulging in sumptuous spa treatments,” she said.
