The Offshore Superboat Championships is Australia’s national series for Powerboat racing with round one set to take place in Newcastle on 25 & 26 April and round four to be held in Coffs Harbour on 15 & 16 August.

‘I am pleased to announce that the NSW Government, through its tourism and major events agency Destination NSW, is supporting this year’s Offshore Superboat Championships,’ Mr Ayres said.

‘This event is set to provide a fantastic experience to local spectators as well as those who are visiting from outside the region as teams go head-to-head in fast and furious racing action around Newcastle Harbour and Coffs Harbour Marina.

‘Events play an important role in driving visitation across NSW, which helps to achieve the NSW Government’s goal of doubling overnight visitor expenditure by 2020.

‘In the year ending December 2014, Regional NSW experienced more than 50 million international and domestic visitors.

‘These numbers resulted in an economic impact of $13.6 billion which strongly indicate the importance of investing in regional events which are a major contributor the State’s overnight visitor economy,’ Mr Ayres added.

Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said continued support in regional events provides a strong platform to showcase the wonderful NSW regions and motivate those who are considering taking a holiday.

‘I encourage everyone to begin planning a trip to Newcastle or Coffs Harbour for this exciting, thrill-seeking event. While in the region, I would recommend exploring each area’s spectacular beaches, local food and wine and diverse range of attractions,’ Ms Chipchase said.
