Media release from Football Australia:
Football Australia is delighted to announce that the Subway Socceroos will host Indonesia at the Sydney Football Stadium, Sydney on Thursday, 20 March 2025 (kick-off 8:00pm AEDT) as part of their Round Three AFC Asian Qualifiers™ – Road To 26 Qualification campaign.
The matchup on home soil against Indonesia represents an important clash in the Subway Socceroos’ campaign, as they continue their journey towards the FIFA World Cup 2026™ and the prospect of a sixth consecutive appearance at international football’s showpiece event in Canada, Mexico and the United States.
This will be the Subway Socceroos’ first match at the newly reconstructed Sydney Football Stadium in nearly a decade, with their last appearance at the venue a FIFA World Cup 2018™ Qualifier against the United Arab Emirates in March 2017.
The Subway Socceroos were last in Sydney – thanks to the continued support of the New South Wales Government – in March 2024, running out 2-0 winners overLebanon at Western Sydney Stadium in a Round Two Qualifier.
Football Australia CEO, James Johnson, expressed his excitement about the Subway Socceroos’ return to the Sydney Football Stadium after eight years.
"Sydney has played host to some of the most iconic moments in the history of our men’s national team, and we are thrilled to bring the Subway Socceroos back to this incredible city," Johnson said.
"The support for the team across New South Wales has always been phenomenal, and with so much at stake in 2025, we’re confident fans will create an electric atmosphere at the Sydney Football Stadium once again.
"This state-of-the-art venue promises an unforgettable experience for everyone who comes to cheer on the Subway Socceroos in this pivotal Qualifier. We are deeply grateful to the NSW Government and Destination NSW for their ongoing commitment to football and our national teams," Johnson concluded.
NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism, John Graham said:
"Sydney has kicked another goal as the nation’s home of football in securing this all-important FIFA World Cup Qualifier between the Socceroos and Indonesia. This special event will provide local and visiting fans with a fantastic opportunity to watch our national football heroes in an electric atmosphere.”
The fixture against Indonesia represents a potential homecoming for the likes of Mitchell Duke (FC Machida Zelvia), Lewis Miller (Hibernian FC) and Maty Ryan (AS Roma) who all played their junior football in Sydney.
Subway Socceroos’ Head Coach, Tony Popovic said returning to Sydney for his first game at the helm of the national team would be a significant moment.
“I’ve been very privileged to be on this coaching journey so far, to now return to the city where I grew up and my football journey began as Socceroos Head Coach will be a special moment for my family and close friends who have played such a pivotal role in my career,” Popovic said.
“It will also be special for those players and football staff from New South Wales returning home, working or playing in front of family and friends as part of the national team.
“We’ve taken great strides as a group in recent months, and I look forward to building on those foundations in 2025,” Popovic concluded.
Scheduled to be played from September 2024 to June 2025, the AFC Asian Qualifiers™ – Road to 26 will feature three groups of six teams playing in a home-and-away, round-robin format, offering direct qualification to the FIFA World Cup 2026™ for the top two finishers of each group.
