The NSW Taxi Council has launched the NSW Taxi Driver Ambassador Program to help taxi drivers deliver higher service standards to visitors to Sydney.

The Taxi Driver Ambassador Program has been developed by the NSW Taxi Council in collaboration with leaders within the NSW Taxi Industry, Business Sydney, Destination NSW and City of Sydney.

The initiative has been funded through a City of Sydney Business Sector Support Grant Program.

A training course will focus on areas including:

  • the role of taxis in Sydney’s visitor economy
  • how to improve passenger experiences
  • setting higher standards for service delivery
  • regulatory framework and expectations.

Taxi drivers will also gain additional knowledge of Sydney landmarks and attractions, route planning and navigation skills with a focus on ensuring safe, suitable, convenient and accessible pick-up and drop-off points.

NSW Taxi Council CEO Nick Abrahim said: “The Ambassador Program has been developed as a platform to recognise our hero cabbies who go above and beyond to ensure they put their best foot forward each and every time a passenger gets into their taxi.”

The program has been praised by industry leaders.

Cruise Lines Association International Australasia Managing Director Joel Katz said: "Cruise tourism and taxis are deeply connected. Every year, thousands of cruise guests rely on taxis to move seamlessly between the port, hotels, airports, and key attractions. Whether it’s a pre- or post-cruise stay or a day ashore, a well-trained, knowledgeable taxi driver makes all the difference in shaping a guest’s experience.

"The Taxi Driver Ambassador Program will set higher service standards, improve local knowledge, and ensure that Sydney’s taxis continue to play a key role in delivering a world-class tourism experience."
