Up to 150,000 spectators are expected to line the streets of Sydney on 15 September 2024 for the TCS Sydney Marathon.

The crowds will be cheering on 25,000 runners, making the race the largest marathon in Australian history.

TCS Sydney Marathon has unveiled major upgrades to its spectator live sites and on-course entertainment at hubs across the city.

Five spectator live sites in The Rocks, Surry Hills, Randwick, Centennial Park and UNSW Sydney have been introduced this year, offering race fans coffee, food trucks and entertainment.

These sites will also feature large screens broadcasting the marathon live.

Additional ‘Hot Corners’ will be activated by TRANSURBAN at the corner of Macquarie Street and Bent Street, and by ASICS at the corner of Macquarie Street and Prince Albert Road. Featuring live DJs and MCs, they will offer prime viewing locations as runners pass by during the race.

TCS Sydney Marathon Race Director Wayne Larden said: “The TCS Sydney Marathon is a shared experience for runners and spectators alike.

“A marathon creates a unique connection between runners and spectators, and Sydney is renowned globally for its electric atmosphere. Every year it’s amazing to see such a diverse group of people come together to push their limits.

"As Australia’s largest ever marathon we can’t wait to have marathon runners feed off the energy of the crowd, while our spectators are equally moved by the bravery and resolve of ordinary individuals taking on this significant challenge.”

This year’s event will feature top ranked international marathon runners and rising stars in its final push to become an Abbott World Marathon Major in 2025.

Destination NSW is proud to support TCS Sydney Marathon’s candidacy to become one of the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors, which will see the city join the world’s greatest marathon destinations - New York, Boston, Chicago, London, Tokyo and Berlin.

Assessors from around the world are in Sydney to evaluate the delivery of the marathon and its overall participant experience before deciding whether to bestow Sydney Marathon with Abbott World Marathon Major status in 2025.

"The journey to becoming an Abbott World Marathon Major has been a monumental effort, requiring a deep commitment from the NSW Government, Destination NSW, Government agencies, Athletics Australia, sponsors and the running community” said Mr Larden.

“When we began this candidacy, we were fielding 5,300 participants and in just three short years, we’ve grown to 25,000 runners, making Sydney the largest marathon in Australia. The work that has gone into reaching this point has been extraordinary, and we are now on the brink of making history."
