Tourism Research Australia data shows NSW is Australia’s top destination for international luxury travellers.
NSW was number one for visitors, nights and expenditure in the year ending December 2023. The state attracted a 55 per cent share of the luxury holiday market in Australia.
The luxury holiday market is defined as international holiday visitors who stayed at least one night in a luxury accommodation including hotels, resorts and/or glamping in NSW.
Expenditure by international luxury holiday visitors to NSW rose 63.9 per cent in the year ending December 2023 versus the year ending December 2019. The average expenditure for luxury travellers was $845 per night, with a total of $3946 per visitor.
The luxury holiday market attracted 626,000 international visitors during the period (up 0.3 per cent), with visitors staying 2.9 million nights (up 34.2 per cent).
The most popular visitor experience in Sydney was the Sydney Opera House. The most popular regional NSW destination was the Blue Mountains, followed by Port Stephens and Wollongong/South Coast.
