New research from the Tourism & Transport Forum (TTF) has found NSW is most popular state for Australians to visit, while Sydney is the most popular city.

The nationally representative survey of 1509 Australians was conducted by Pure Profile between 10-14 March 2025 and asked Australians about their autumn travel plans.

The research found 71 per cent of Australians were planning a getaway between 15 March and 15 May, with 35 per cent intending to travel within their own state, while 22 per cent were considering a holiday interstate.

The most popular state for Australians to visit this month is NSW (29 per cent) and the most popular city is Sydney (11 per cent). NSW’s Central Coast was among the most popular regional destinations.

Among travellers, 37 per cent were looking to spend between $2000-$5000 on their trip.

The most prolific travellers were 25-44 year olds, with 83 per cent planning a trip between 15 March – 15 May, markedly higher than the national average of 71 per cent.

TTF CEO Margy Osmond said: “Aussies are ready to get out and explore beyond their own backyard again.

"While the cost-of-living continues to influence spending, it hasn’t dampened Australians' enthusiasm for travel. We’re simply finding ways to adapt, focusing on value-for-money options and planning smarter trips to keep costs down.

"Australia is a nation that prioritises travel, something that isn’t changing anytime soon."
